How credit utilization is calculated
Add up your credit card balances and divide by your total credit limits, then multiply by 100. If you owe $1,650 on cards with $10,000 of limits, your utilization is 16.5%. Scores look at that overall number and at each card on its own.
What's a good credit utilization ratio?
Lower is generally better. Under 30% is the usual rule of thumb, and people with FICO Scores of 800 or more use about 7% of their limits on average, according to Experian's data as of June 2026. A small balance that you pay in full each month can score slightly better than 0%, so there's no need to carry a balance or pay interest.
Which balances to enter
Use the balance on each card's latest statement. Card issuers usually report that number to the credit bureaus, even if you pay it off a few weeks later. Include every credit card, cards you're an authorized user on, and other revolving lines of credit. Leave out car loans, mortgages, student loans and personal loans: installment loans don't count toward utilization.
